ENCOUNTERS UNDER THE LIGHTS

Kateryna Burlina, Francisco Tomsich, Martín Verges

This in an exhibition produced collectively by the artists Martín Verges (Uruguay), Francisco Tomsich (Uruguay/Slovenia) and Kateryna Burlina (Ukraine/Slovenia) in the framework of the artist-in-residency programme Algia, developed by the cultural association Boja from Izola (@boja_izola).

Martín Verges came to Izola directly from Montevideo on the 17th of June 2023 (he was staying in Izola until the 1st of July). Before that, however, we started to think about him joining Kateryna Burlina and Francisco Tomsich’s usual meetings in the streets of Izola to make portraits of friends and eventually interested (and interesting) passers-by. On 12th June he participated via WhatsApp in one of those sessions, here represented by two pieces made at the occasion by Kateryna and Francisco (the one one from Martin remained in Uruguay).

The remaining pieces were made by the three artists working together between 29th and 30th June. They met to talk and draw in houses, studios, bars and squares, and invited friends to pose for them.

We want to thank all the persons who posed for us and/or helped us to develop this project, host Martín and produce the exhibitions, tours, visits, artworks and conversations which made this experience so warm and friendly.
